The History of TEDWebIn 1997 the Community Nutrition Unit (Department of Health and Human Services) undertook a needs assessment which surveyed people with an eating disorder, their families, friends, and health professionals working in the area of eating disorders. The survey identified significant gaps in the provision of eating disorder services in Tasmania, including inadequate referral, support and specialist treatment services. It found that people seeking help often have difficulty finding information about eating disorders, and finding the appropriate support and professional help they need. This is particularly concerning because early detection and support is an important factor in long term recovery. The report also identified the need for training of health workers to improve their knowledge and skills in the detection and treatment of eating disorders. Furthermore, because of the limited Tasmanian services available it is not uncommon for people to go interstate seeking professional help. This can add significant financial, social and emotional stresses to sufferers and their families. Unlike other states, Tasmania does not have an Eating Disorder Association. An Association provides community members and service providers information, support and referral advice on eating disorders. It also works towards establishing better services for eating disorder sufferers and their families. If you would like a copy of the 1997 Eating Disorder Needs Assessment in PDF format click here. TEDWeb is one step in providing Tasmanians with information that may support them to make more informed decisions and to get assistance earlier.
